Securing Your Bid: Mastering National Grid Cable Installation – Utility Access Platforms

Massive opportunities are hitting the UK energy sector right now. For contractors looking to scale up, one particular tender stands out. National Grid just launched an £80 million HV Cable framework specifically for Installation projects across its entire UK network. This isn’t just another job. It is a multi-year commitment. The framework kicks off on May 29, 2026, and runs until May 28, 2027, with potential for extensions. The deadline is April 30, 2026. If you are serious about securing your share of this work, you need an ironclad strategy. At Cumberland Platforms, we know the complexities. We are here to make sure your access equipment strategy is as robust as your bid.

Navigating the National Grid HV cable framework

Let’s look at what this framework actually covers. It is not just about digging trenches. We are talking about new and replacement high-voltage cable circuits on existing 275kV and 400kV routes. There is also significant work on 66kV, 132kV, and other lower voltage circuits. This encompasses jointing, testing, commissioning, and all associated civil works.

National Grid demands proven capability in handling live-network interfaces and outage-constrained programmes. You must demonstrate strict compliance with the technical specifications for high-voltage systems. It is a high-stakes environment. Precision and safety are everything.

Planning for Tender Success

Securing a piece of this £80 million framework means planning. Engaging with us early is a strategic advantage. You need to integrate superior access solutions directly into your bids. Show National Grid that you are equipped with the best tools in the industry. We can help you identify the precise platforms that will strengthen your proposal.

Choosing the Right Utility Access Platforms: An Expert Guide from CPL

Getting the right equipment isn’t just about ticking boxes. It is about safety, efficiency, and making sure your team can do the job right the first time. For fleet managers and utility contractors, choosing utility access platforms means understanding how technical specs translate to real-world performance. Here at CPL, we build these machines. We know what works and we know why it works.

You are not just buying a piece of kit. You are investing in your productivity and worker safety. The bottom line is that we are here to cut through the noise and give you the facts you need to keep your fleet moving.

Why Your Platform Choice is Critical

On any job site, downtime costs money. Worse yet, using the wrong equipment can put your crew at risk. Whether you are replacing streetlights, maintaining telecom networks, or working on low-voltage distribution, the platform you choose needs to match the task’s demands precisely. What is more, small differences in specification can make a huge impact out in the field. We see this on our workshop floor every day.

The CPL E18P: Serious Reach and Power

Sometimes the job demands height and outreach. Our CPL E18P is built for exactly that. This is a chassis-mounted telescopic platform designed for significant elevation and horizontal reach. It is a true workhorse for utility operations.

The E18P offers a maximum working height of 18.2 meters (60 ft). That is a serious elevation. The maximum outreach hits 12.0 meters (40 ft). This means your operators can reach further without repositioning the vehicle constantly. Less repositioning. More work. It is that simple.

The basket capacity is 230kg, which comfortably handles two operators plus their essential tools. Designed it with a 360-degree non-continuous slew and H-frame outriggers for maximum stability. This is a critical factor for utility work where uneven ground is common. We typically mount the E18P on a 7t chassis cab, Iveco Daily. Expect a useful payload with a fully kitted on-board workshop with storage. It is an insulated unit up to 46KV (ANSI 92.2), providing standard protection against incidental contact.

CPL E15P2: Agile Performance for Urban Work

Not every job needs 18 metres of height. For many urban environments or jobs requiring a slightly more compact footprint, the CPL E15P2 delivers outstanding agility. It is a favourite among teams working in tighter spaces who still need high-end features.

The E15P2 provides a maximum working height of 15.1 meters (50 ft). You still get substantial height, but with a more condensed profile. The maximum outreach is 9.5 meters (31 ft) at a 120kg basket load. This is excellent for a platform of its size. Like its larger sibling, it features 360-degree non-continuous slew and H-frame outriggers for secure operation. This level of stability is non-negotiable for us.

Mounted on a 3.5t chassis cab, the E15P2 often offers great payload with plenty of locker and storage space. It also comes with 46kV insulation (ANSI 92.2). For Telco maintenance or smaller Utilities installations, the E15P2 is a highly efficient choice. It is about getting the job done where space is at a premium while maintaining 4×4 Capabilities.

Specialised Safety: 2kV Downrated Van-Mounted Platforms

We understand that utility work is not a one-size-fits-all scenario. Some tasks demand specific insulation without the overhead of full high-voltage systems. That is where our 2kV downrated van-mounted platforms come in. These are not just any van mounts. They are engineered for specific low-voltage applications.

Our E series van-mounted platforms, built on robust bases like the Renault Master, typically offer working heights from 12m. The real differentiator here is the insulation. These particular utility access platforms are certified for safe work around low-voltage distribution systems, rated specifically to 2,000 Volts (2kV).

This 2kV downrated insulation is crucial for operations like low-voltage street lighting maintenance. It provides vital protection from incidental contact at these specific voltage levels without the increased weight and cost of higher-rated systems. Payload is often a critical factor here, with useful capacity ranging from 250 to 450kg for tools inside the vehicle.

Key Factors for Your Selection

When you are spec’ing out your next fleet, do not overlook these points. First, consider the payload. What tools and personnel do you need to lift? Every kilogram counts on a 3.5t vehicle. Second, look at outreach against height. Consider the typical obstructions on your job sites. Does height or horizontal reach cause more challenges for your crew?

Third, check the insulation requirements. Do your operators work near live electrical apparatus? Match the platform insulation rating precisely to the job voltage demands. Over-specifying can add unnecessary weight. Under-specifying is a safety hazard. We have poured decades of engineering expertise into every CPL machine to ensure they stand up to these tough decisions.
