Glossary

Mobile Elevating Work Platform — a machine used to lift people (and their tools) to work at height, like cherry pickers, scissor lifts, boom lifts, and vehicle-mounted platforms.

A general term for equipment designed to provide safe access for working at height. In practice it often includes MEWPs, but can also refer more broadly to other work-at-height access equipment depending on context.

Gross Vehicle Weight — the maximum legal total weight of a vehicle when loaded, including the vehicle itself, driver/passengers, fuel, body/conversion, payload, tools, and any equipment.

Single Vehicle Approval — a UK approval route used to confirm an individual vehicle meets required standards before it can be registered/used (commonly used for certain imports, kit builds, or low-volume/specialist vehicles).

An approval/certification process where a vehicle or product design (“type”) is tested/assessed against regulations/standards so all items built to that approved type can be placed on the market/registered without re-approving each one individually.

The vehicle maker’s formal sign-off that a body/build/conversion (or an installer/upfitter) meets their requirements—typically covering things like allowable loads, mounting methods, electrical integration, warranty, safety, and compliance.

Vehicle Certification Agency — the UK government agency responsible for vehicle approval and certification activities (including type approval work and related compliance/certification services).
