We’ve put together some security tips for arborists to keep both your vehicle and your equipment safe and prevent theft.
Protecting Your Gear: Essential Security Tips for Arborists’ Vans and Equipment
As an arborist, your equipment is the backbone of your business. With high-value tools and machinery, your van can be a tempting target for theft—especially as we approach a time of year when such incidents tend to rise. We’ve put together some essential tips to keep your vehicle and equipment safe, ensuring your tools stay where they belong: with you, ready for the job.
It’s easy to leave your van unlocked when you’re only working a few meters away, but a quick lock can prevent opportunistic theft. Get into the habit of locking up, even if you’re only away for a moment.
While branding can be good for business, a logo or company name can also serve as a signal to thieves, advertising what’s likely inside. Instead, opt for discreet, unmarked vehicles to reduce your chances of being targeted.
The best way to keep your expensive equipment safe is to avoid leaving it in your van overnight. When possible, store high-value items inside a secure location to reduce the risk of overnight theft.
4.Upgrade Your Van’s Locks
While standard locks can deter casual attempts, a high-quality, reinforced deadlock or deadbolt adds another layer of security. These locks operate independently from your van’s standard system, making it harder for thieves to access your equipment.
When parking, look for areas with good lighting and high foot traffic. Thieves are more likely to avoid well-lit, busy places where there’s a greater risk of being seen.
Show thieves that your van is secure. Installing visible security features, like steering locks or handbrake locks, and adding mesh grilles over windows, signals that your vehicle is not an easy target.
Even if you don’t have a tracker, consider adding a sticker that suggests otherwise. Thieves are less likely to take the risk if they believe the vehicle is trackable.
A tracking device is an invaluable tool in recovering stolen property. If a theft occurs, a tracking device increases the chances of recovering your van and its contents quickly, reducing downtime for your business.
High-quality, anti-drill van boxes provide a secure storage option inside your van. These metal boxes add another barrier, protecting your tools even if someone gains access to the vehicle.
Armaplates encase the lock barrel and surrounding area, providing an extra layer of protection. This makes it more difficult for thieves to tamper with or bypass your locks, giving you more peace of mind when your van is unattended.
By following these steps, you can reduce the risk of theft and keep your business running smoothly. After all, your tools are an investment—protecting them is protecting your livelihood.
