CPL | Cherry Picker Safety: Why Getting Your Stabilisation Right is Non-Negotiable

Whenever you send a team up in a basket, absolutely everything relies on one critical factor: MEWP stabilisation.

Whether your operators are navigating a nimble van-mounted cherry picker, a rugged 4×4 MEWP, or a tracked spider lift, how that machine is anchored to the ground dictates the safety, compliance, and ultimate success of the entire job.

Too often, setting up the stabilisers is treated as a quick bit of admin before the ‘real’ work begins. But if you look at the latest industry safety data, poor setup and misjudged ground conditions are still catching people out. Here is why getting your stabilisation right matters, and how to ensure you are always matching the right machine to the right environment.

MEWP Stabilisation

What the Safety Data is Actually Telling Us

If you look at recent incident reports from IPAF, specifically around Category 1b static boom platforms, a stark theme emerges. A massive proportion of serious incidents simply comes down to a loss of stability.

“Overturns were the most common type of incident in 2024, resulting in 11 fatalities and 19 major injuries. The most common type of MEWP to overturn in 2024 was 1b with just over 40%.”

The usual suspects? Rushing the outrigger deployment, setting up on deceptively soft ground, pushing the outreach just that bit too far, or underestimating the wind. The HSE is crystal clear on this: MEWPs belong on firm, preferably level ground, with their stabilisation systems fully and properly deployed. For operators and fleet buyers alike, this isn’t just best practice; it’s your primary responsibility.

The Real-World Risks: Wind and Ground Conditions

You can have the most advanced MEWP on the market, but it still has to contend with the great British weather and unpredictable site surfaces.

The Wind Factor: A gentle breeze on the pavement can feel completely different at 20 metres up. Wind dramatically increases boom sway, makes the basket much harder to control, and actively tries to destabilise the machine. Every MEWP has a strict wind rating. Ignoring it isn’t just risky; it’s a direct breach of safe operating protocols.

Ground Conditions: A machine that feels glued to the tarmac can become incredibly dangerous on wet grass, churning construction mud, or sloping rural verges. This is exactly why matching the machine to the environment is so crucial.

Which Machine for Which Ground?

Different jobs demand completely different equipment, and understanding how each machine handles stabilisation is key to keeping your teams safe.

CPL Van-Mounted Platforms: Speed vs. Stability Our smaller, compact van-mounts are brilliant for urban street lighting or telecom call-outs because they often don’t require outriggers. You park up, elevate, and get the job done. However, they strictly belong on firm surfaces (KL21B, KL26 & KL32). Compared to our larger Kl38P (3.5t) and K42P 5-tonne class platforms, you gain massive reach and payload, but they must be used with fully deployed twin-outrigger stabilisers and a rigorous ground assessment.

CPL 4×4 Mounted Platforms: Built for the Rough Stuff. If your typical Tuesday involves forestry work, arboriculture, or rural utilities, standard vans simply won’t cut it. Our 4×4 MEWPs give you the traction and mobility to tackle uneven, off-road terrain safely. That off-road pedigree is fantastic, but operators still need a sharp eye for ground assessment before they even think about elevating. Compared to the van-mounts, this has 4 outriggers, giving operators confidence and security.

Tracked Spider Lifts: Maximum Stability on Tricky Sites When the ground is soft, sloping, or highly restricted, machines from Palazzani and Almacrawler come into their own. With low ground-pressure tracks and deployable outriggers as standard, they can self-level on incredibly awkward terrain. But remember: those outriggers must be fully deployed on suitable ground, using spreader plates wherever necessary. (And yes, this applies just as strictly to the whisper-quiet electric models; zero emissions does not mean zero gravity!).

The Classic Setup Mistakes: MEWP Stabilisation

Across all sites and sectors, we see the same easily avoidable mistakes cropping up repeatedly:

  • Skipping a full outrigger deployment just to save five minutes.
  • Failing to check the ground properly before setting up.
  • Chancing a quick job in high winds.
  • Overloading the basket with heavy tools.
  • Leaving the spreader plates in the locker when the ground is soft.
  • Travelling mobile boom and mobile vertical MEWPs across unsuitable ground, whether in the elevated or stowed position.

It Starts Before the Basket Leaves the Ground

For the operator, stabilisation is your primary safety net. Before you even touch the elevation controls, check your slope, assess the ground’s load-bearing capacity, check the wind speed, and double-check those outriggers. If it feels wrong, stop and reassess.

For the procurement manager, safety starts at the buying stage. If you buy a compact van-mount for a team that spends half its week in muddy fields, you are severely limiting their efficiency and drastically increasing their risk. Always ask: Where is this machine actually going to spend most of its time?
